Coco so-so or Coco no-go?

The media circus over this one possibly broken, possibly jammed finger is amazing. Joy of Sox is keeping track of the individual, mostly conflicting, media reports. I don't remember it being anything like this back in 2002 when Manny broke his finger, which honestly was a much bigger deal. The amount of hysteria from the sports media this seem like, I dunno, the Sinking of the Lusitania or something.

And with that Sinking of the Lusitania reference, I have exhausted my entire knowledge of world history from high school. Oh yeah, except for some stuff about the Fertile Crescent. And the Magna Carta. But after those things came the Sinking of the Lusitania. And then Princess Di got married, and that brings us to today, the day which Coco Crisp may or may not have broken his finger.

  1. Worst case scenario-Coco gone for a month. We have a capable, hell a MORE than capable replacement in Canada'a darling, Adam Stern. What, me worry? Call me Alfred. No way will I be worried. The kid has a great arm and can catch AND hit the ball.

  2. And let's not forget that we have that .450+BA in spring training Dustin Mohr in AAA. AND Wily Mo can get a few more ABs.

Of course, my fantasy baseball team would like to see Coco back...But this team should be fine either way.

If Coco is out for a while, does Loretta move to the one spot? Youk? Stern?

  3. And I know this is about Coco, but I didn't want to start a new thread with this...Here's something from Sports Illustrated...

"The Yankees appear to be very similar to last year's team -- thunderous bats and abysmal defense. .. But defense doesn't matter much when you can score 10 runs in any given game and Randy Johnson is featuring electric stuff. If the Big Unit can maintain this form, I like the Yankees' chances of ending their championship drought."

Can we really call this a drought? I mean, compared to the Red Sox, yes...it is a drought...but, come on...The Yankees and "drought" should never appear together.

And, the last time I checked...one pitcher with "electric stuff" doesn't win championships. Ask the Red Sox about how that worked with just Pedro...

  4. Yeah the ridiculousness of that SI item is pretty obvious.

So he is saying is that the team is like last year - lots of runs and an ace at the top. But that team did not win. So I don't get it. Sure they could win. so could a bunch of other teams. I guess its like playing craps, roll the dice long enough and a seven will come up.

  7. I guess they have until tomorrow to do it, but I'm a bit surprised they haven't put Coco on the DL. They are saying 10 days, but he can be retro'd to Saturday. And with Julian sitting out we are down a player already.
