There is a pretty cool article in today's NYT about the border of Yankees fandom and Red Sox Nation. X, you're safe. You were raised in pretty solid RSN territory, although they say Hartford is only 2/3 RSN. There is also a pretty good video clip of the journalist doing his research for the story. It's mostly ancedotel but still pretty interesting., albeit cheesy at times.
I have a feeling if someone did a more detailed study they would find large pockets of both Yankee and Red Sox fans behind enemy lines. I had always heard that New London is a heavy Yankees town which steams back to the days that the Yankees would stop there for the night on the train rides to and from Boston. Also from my days of working in Rhode Island I seem to remember odd pockets of Yankee fans there as well. I think that had more to do with Providence being in Boston's shadow then anything else, as I recall.
Anyway, let the war begin!
So who's going to be bigger our Johnson or their Wang? (Couldn't resist).
Hartford equals 65 percent Sox fans, 30 percent Yankee fans, and the rest...fans of the Mets, and baseball itself. 1 pm..coming quick, and the mood for the entire series rests on Jason Johnson's shoulders. I'm ready. 2 hours or so. YES!
ReplyDeleteNESN!
ReplyDeleteEarl - very nice!! Unfortunately I have the feeling that will be getting the YES feed out here. Maybe I will simultaneously hook up the XM to get the EEI feed.
ReplyDeleteJT, thanks for that article. Very interesting, however the one thing that is not really touched upon (well actually two things) is A) how someone ends up on one side of the rivalry vs. the others and B) the affect it can have on someone for their entire life.
For instance, while our residence until I was 12 was firmly on the RSN "side" of the line, there were definitely influences of both. The deciding factor in my decision to be a Sox fan was because I had two cousins who were both older - one was a Yank fan (8 years older) the other a Sox fan (6 years older) and the older one picked on me more and the younger one used to stick up for. So aside from the perfect symmetry of the Yankee fan being the bully, that is what led to a seriously life influencing decision on my behalf - becoming a Red Sox fan. They actually lived a few miles away in Cromwell, which according to the map, is pretty much right on the mason dixon line.
And to the second point on how it affects your entire life. Had I "chosen" to be Yankee fan, not only would I have probably been an asshole, my life likely would have been very different. About 4 years after I became a Sox fan (a real fan too - I had a Fisk poster in my bedroom and one year switched into a Red Sox T-shirt on school picture day - my mom still freaks about that one), my family moved to just outside Boston. Imagine if I had "chosen" to be Yankee fan. That would have sucked. Plus, a major reason I chose Boston University was its proximity to Fenway. I didn't tell my parents or guidance counselor at the time, but it really was reason number one. Lord only knows what my life would have been like had I gone to City College?
Now of course I take baseball slightly more serious than the average "fan" but not a year goes by where I think about how things played out. And I also thank my (nice) cousin for leading down the right path. Although there were definitely a few times pre-2004 that I cursed him.
Now is the time to win some games. To follow up to GR's question about where are all the articles on the Yanks not putting the Sox away while they Sox have injuries to Tek, Nixon, welll I just saw a crappy graphic. On July 26, the osx had a 2.5 game lead. Now it is 1.5 the other way and was as high as 3. So the Yanks have been making hay. Now is the time to stop that crap. 3 of 5 would be nice. I heard the idiot Bob Ryan saying they had to win 4, which is ridiculous. these teams are so evenly matched that 3-2 for either on is almost guaranteed here. Unless we can pull an April 2004 smackdown....
ReplyDeleteMan, just watching JJ pitch makes me scared. 1-1 to Damon.
ReplyDeleteLeadoff triple. Allright...
ReplyDeleteExploded head happening here.
ReplyDelete1-0, no outs, top of the first...
ReplyDeleteOur Johnson doesn't seem to be working right...
3 batters, 3 hits...Is Snyder up and throwing yet???
ReplyDeleteOh my god this sucks. Three hits to leadoff the game.
ReplyDeleteWell, at least this is sort of funny.
1 out. 26 more to go and JJ has a 1-run complete game.
ReplyDeleteDon't worry quite yet. Sometimes it takes a little bit of warming up before our Johnson is rock solid.
ReplyDeleteAt the same time, all the waiting without any sort of action may affect the performance of Wang.
ReplyDeleteDamn, Coco sucks at bunting.
ReplyDeleteDamn, Hinske in RF. Weird to see that...I am sort of surprised the Jays traded him considering they are back in the race.
ReplyDeleteWow, Tina Cervasio has disturbingly white teeth. Some of these photos make my eyes hurt.
ReplyDeleteI agree, it is weird to see Hinske out there. I was never a fan of the guy, but I'm glad he's on our side now. Apparently they've thrown in the towel for the year. Maybe the plan/hope was to get the WC?
ReplyDeleteJJ with a 1-2-3 inning...
1-1...Johnson has become stiff competition for Wang.
ReplyDeleteShould we reconvene on the Damon post now? That hurts...
ReplyDeleteBack to Hinskie for a second....
ReplyDeleteDon’t be surprised if a few eyebrows get raised when the PTBNL in the Hinskie deal is announced. From what I’m reading, the Jays absorbed half of Hinskie’s 2007 salary ($2.8 Million). One way to look at that is that the player is someone JP would be willing to pay $2.8 Million to acquire, because Toronto could have simply told the Sox to take Hinskie full salary and all by withdrawing the waiver claim. Sure Toronto has “freed up” $2.8 Million next year, but they still could have been free of it all. I would not be surprised to see a true mid level prospect (a David Murphy or an Abe Alvarez – maybe it would have been Alvarez if he was not on the DL now).
And while I am generally a Theo supporter, I found this bit from the Herald on the Hinskie trade a bit interesting in the least disingenuous at worst: “Epstein said the deal would not have been made had the Blue Jays not “heavily subsidized” Hinske’s 2007 salary of $5.6 million.” As noted above, the Jays could have just said “Take him, he’s yours. Along with the $7.0 million owed to him.”
We need one more out now, bad.
ReplyDeleteFollowed by some hitting with RISP.
I just can't believe that the Sox would deal Murphy for Hinske. However, I could see that because Hinske probably has as much pop as Murphy and is flexible (he can play IF as well).
ReplyDeleteAlso, Poppa Jack seems to be really good at getting guys who've had the Wily Mo injury back into form (Ortiz had the same surgery while in Minnesota, and he's ok now, I'd say). Maybe they think they can get Hinske back to his old form.
Also, also...Trot will be on the Dodgers next year...well, he won't be on the Red Sox.
MANNY!!!
ReplyDeleteYeah, Murphy was just a name, more as an example of the type of player, not so much that I think it will be him. In fact the Jays are pretty set in the OF with Rios, Reed Johnson and if they can get Wells extended past 2007. The point is, don't expect it to be some player that we have not heard of, or only marginally have heard of. Certainly not with the $$$ Toronto kicked in.
ReplyDeleteTrot on the Dodgers sounds about right, but they already have JD Drew, who's basically a Trot clone: a LH right-fielder, who's really good when he's healthy - which is not-so-often.
ReplyDeleteOn a related note, here's a theory which is pretty out there but may actually have some truth to it: maybe teams like the Dodgers actually sign former Red Sox and Yanks to their teams to try to boost their attendance? The most passionate baseball fans out here are the people from Boston and New York, so if you can get them to go to your games...
Also, many of the Sox and Yankees cast offs are still very good players. If you can get Nomar, you get Nomar...I wish this town wasn't so unkind to him when he was traded. The guy was a gamer and this past offseason, he would have been a pretty nice pickup...
ReplyDeleteWow, nice catch by Hinske. So: if the ball had clanged off the post-thing that he bumped into, would it have been in play, or a HR?
ReplyDelete3 doubles. nice catch.
ReplyDeletegood start for hinskie!!!
Seriously. His slugging percentage: 2.
ReplyDeleteHinske is playing his a@# off...great pickup so far...Looks like he enjoys Fenway and is looking to start everyday...
ReplyDeleteJD Drew has an out clause in his (terrible for the Dodgers) contract. At this point, it is doubtful he would exercise it. The deal had three more years at $11 each and based on both his brittle nature and declining production (even accounting for the park), it is unlikely he could top what he has left on that deal.
ReplyDeleteAdn really what a bad deal for the Dodgers - if he sucks you're stuck with him for 5 years. If he is great, he leaves you after 2.
Let's go Coco...
ReplyDeleteMethinks we'll see Proctor, Dotel, Farnsworth and Rivera if Coco gets on.
ReplyDeleteYeah, Paul DePodesta really was just a weird GM. I couldn't figure him out, at all.
ReplyDeleteUgh - should've scored more runs that half inning.
Never mind...boooooo
ReplyDeleteWell Depo got a lot of bad press in LA. And the Drew deal was questionablr, but he did make some pretty decent moves. Penny got hurt right after he traded for him, but is now one of the best pitchers in the NL. Not signing Beltre was a HUGE addition by subtraction. He wisely let guys way past their prime walk - Finley, Lima, Cora. And he was responsible for brining in Kent and Bradley. Both have had some ups and downs but generally were positive moves. I think he got shit because he was a moneyball type with a Dan Duquette like personality.
ReplyDeleteMan, this game got ugly fast.
ReplyDeleteDePo also gave huge contracts to Derek Lowe and Odalis Perez, right? Those three - who can hardly be considered impact players this year or last - are making almost $30M. That's sort of a lot.
Yikes...Delcarmen should pitch the rest of this game...don't use up the pen in Game 1 of 5.. (even though I know he can't pitch the rest of the game)
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, I forgot about Lowe. Perez was not as bad, he was coming off a good year. But Lowe was silly.
ReplyDeleteHinske giveth and Hinske taketh away.
ReplyDeleteI just got one more bit of good news. Hinskie actually had cleared waivers, so it really will be a low-mid level prospect.
ReplyDeleterepeat after me.
ReplyDeleteSydney Ponson is pitching.
Sydney Ponson is pitching.
Sydney Ponson is pitching.
We need to score 12 in the bottom of this inning. Assuming the top half ever ends.
ReplyDeleteIt is possible.
ReplyDeleterepeat after me.
Sydney Ponson is pitching.
Sydney Ponson is pitching.
Sydney Ponson is pitching.
The half-inning is over, mercifully.
ReplyDeletePONSON IS PITCHING
3 doubles for the Sox so far? And 7 in the last game?
ReplyDeleteHmmm. Craig wilson may never live that down.
ReplyDeleteI missed it. Did he Buckner it?
ReplyDeleteSydney Ponson is pitching.
ReplyDeleteSydney Ponson is pitching.
Sydney Ponson is pitching.
Sydney Ponson is pitching.
ReplyDeleteSydney Ponson is pitching.
Sydney Ponson is pitching.
Sydney Ponson is pitching.
ReplyDeleteSydney Ponson is pitching.
Sydney Ponson is pitching.
Yeah, wilson totally bucknered it.
ReplyDeleteYou know the fans should boo Damon some more and get in his head.
Good lord. Trump is in the booth with Don and Jerry.
ReplyDeleteNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
ReplyDeleteSydney Ponson is no longer pitching.
I was just about to say that. Yuck. Even with the bases loaded, I feel we missed our chance.
ReplyDeleteWMP can crush lefties.
ReplyDeleteYes he can, but...
ReplyDeleteAnyway, am I the only one who thinks Hinske won't get another hit in a Red Sox uniform for 2 weeks or so?
Wily MO Pena still swings at low outside crap from left-handers, too...
ReplyDeletedino and I are a couple o beers in to a six and thought we'd check in....
I hate "the donald"...
I hate the Yankees
My head exploded
Yes, you are...Hinske can't hit lefties...But we saw him hit righties today.
ReplyDeleteWith WMp it is hit or miss.
ReplyDeleteHinskie not getting a hit for two weeks. Ouch. It only has to be until Tuesday and it will FEEL like two weeks.
Boooooiiiiit! Oh excuse me... Greive can attest to the first time in years that Jerry actually echoed something I said! It was amazing!
ReplyDeleteEarl and X, have you guys been online for like 10 hours now?
ReplyDeleteWhere is Peter N when you need him!
NH leading Oregon according to the big score board...East Coast rules...
ReplyDeleteSal Fasano has one of the worst moustaches I've ever seen. He looks like the biology teacher from Fast Times crossed with Hank from the Larry Sanders Show.
When Damon struck out I was very happy. I hate him like every other Yankee now...It's even better when his replacement gets a walk to lead off the next inning.
And comes around for the score :-) Sweet...
ReplyDeleteAgain, where is Peter N when you need him?
Coco the man - as he has ALWAYS been. Now lets keep this going and start a four game run. Just Like 2004. From here we go.
ReplyDeleteHow was that?
ReplyDelete1) Dino - what did you say that Remy said afterwards?
ReplyDelete2) If I were a Yankees fan I'd be *pissed* that Torre used Villone for 42 pitches last night. He should've used this guy Bruney.
3) GR - i TOTALLY agree about the biology teacher from Fast Times. I've actually made that exact same comparison before.
4) You guys are drunk.
1. we're not drunky
ReplyDelete2. I said, "We're kinda drunk" and Remy said, "it's the bottom of the third"
3. That Sal Fasano is one drunk dude and as Peter N notes, "a sweet lovin' guy"
4, Good call about Bruney, but I'm lovin' it because that means Villone won't pitch until Monday... although grieve points out "it is Torre"
X, by the way that was an awesome impression... MHJE
ReplyDeleteMan, I wasn't even paying attention. That was absolutely hilarious.
ReplyDeleteMHAJE.
Oh man.
ReplyDeleteHansen needs more time in the minors.
But that's probably not an option.
That's why everyone wanted Lester in deals, too...
ReplyDeletethis 7th inning sucks.
ReplyDeleteI hate this.
ReplyDeleteSo JJ was DFA'd, to make room for Foulke. What's our rotation then? Schilling, Beckett, Wells, Lester,...? Will Wake be ready?
That SUCKED ass.... Let's see what we can do against Mike Myers...
ReplyDeletesnyder will start tuesday
ReplyDeleteI wouldnt be surprised to see Torre use Mo for 2 innings tonight.
ReplyDeleteby the way, if anyone is interested...the dukes of hazzard reunion show is on CMT (Country Music Television)...
ReplyDeleteI foresee a 5-game sweep...This is a demeaning loss following another demeaning loss...Not that it's a loss yet, but I am not too hopeful...
ReplyDeleteOn the plus side, it looks like I can save 15% on my car insurance.
ReplyDeleteOh and here coms foulke. any predictions? Maybe 2/3 inning 3H 2R 2ER 2BB 1K.
ReplyDeleteintersting prediction X... This Foulkin' sucks...
ReplyDeleteyeeha! Go you crazy Dukes...
I apologize...Dino posted under my name. He is now headed home as the game is hopeless...
ReplyDeleteI hate baseball.
ReplyDelete
