Greatest Game Ever

I know the memory is so fresh and it will take some time to see where this one falls out.....

But I am really going to have to think about this game last night and where it ranks. Seriously top 5. Game 7 2001, Game 6 1975. I think the Mazeroski game might make the list, but I didn't see that one obviously. Game 7 of the 91 series (Morris shutout). Both game 6s in the LCS of 1986 - the Hendersen HR and the Mets 16 inning game (after tying in the 9th).

This was even better than the Dave Roberts game since the Sox were down 3-0. If they win that game and then lose game 5 or even game 6, that steal/game is really just a footnote. Should the Rockies win the WS or even just get there, I think this game will grow in "importance."

  1. I agree on many levels. That game was cleanly played by two teams giving everything they had to win a spot in the post-season.

The managing was unbelievable, too. The pitching and lineup changes all seemed to go the way they were planned.

It's a shame one of them had to lose.

Two questionable calls by the umps. It's a shame that seems to be the media's focus about this game. I was glued to the TV despite not particularly caring about either team.

  2. Your last paragraph sums it up exactly.

It was grea to watch a high stakes game and not really "care" about who wins. It was great theater.

And the whole media focus on whether he touched the plate is getting silly. I just spent an hour in the car and all they were talking about on talk radio was the call, replay, etc. Its like the media need to create controversies over every little event. If they had NFL style replay, I'm not sure there was enough to reverse the call on the field.

  3. Not to mention that they missed the home run call earlier in the game that would have probably helped the Rockies win anyway.

It's weird, the instant replay thing...During the regular season there are so many calls that one has to believe that the bad ones even out in the end. If this is game 37, no one is arguing about instant replay. However, in the playoffs bad calls are magnified because of the impact. But, this happens in every sport EVEN WITH REPLAY. For instance, the Troy Polamalu interception against the Colts that was overturned AFTER replay. They got the call right live, but screwed it up on the replay. And the Seahawks bitched and moaned about the calls that went against them in the Super Bowl...There is no perfect system, but MLB umpires seem to get it right 99% of the time, and the human element makes it interesting.

  4. So the roster is set.

Wake is off (bad back) and Lester took the spot reserved for him (long relief).

And in a logic defying move, the Sox will carry three catchers (Tek, Mirabelli and Cash). Why on earth would Mirabellit play if Wake is not pitching. Strange.

That being said, with them only taking 10 pitchers (Beckett, Schill, DiceK and Lester plus Jonathan Papelbon, Hideki Okajima, Eric Gagne, Mike Timlin, Manny Delcarmen and Javier Lopez.), it does not really hurt the bench - Eric Hinske, Bobby Kielty, Jacoby Ellsbury and Alex Cora.

I still might be inclined to take an extra arm - Corey or Snyder.

  5. The only thing I can think of with the three catchers...

If Tek gets hurt (God forbid), and Mirabelli has to start, and he gets walked in the 7th with one out and the Sox down by a run, you could pinch run for him with a speedy guy, and then have Cash catch later.

    But, I agree...Without Wake, I don't get it.

After watching last night's game, I would have taken Corey or Snyder instead.

  6. all the more reason we need lasers in baseball to track everything.

  7. you and the damn lasers...and coming from a soccer background where they should use instant replay! What about a chip in the soccer ball that let's one know when it really goes over the goal line or out of bounds????

    There. That is my rant.

I am so excited about tonight, I can't even work...which isn't unusual (the not working thing)...

  8. Oh, wait...one more rant.

I have a beautiful 46" plasma with high-def...All season long I've watched the Sox as if I were at Fenway...I was thinking, "Ok, Fox will probably carry the game...HIGH DEF!" or "ESPN will carry the game...HIGH DEF!"...but, no, TBS has to carry the game, and RCN doesn't offer TBS in high def...
