I'm going crazy with posts. Ryan Zimmerman just hit a two run bomb in the bottom of the 9th off the Wanger to beat the MFY 3-2.
Funny how we noted yesterday that Torre had to use Mo for two innings on consecutive days. And now paid the price for it - even after Mo lost/blew it yesterday.
Oh wow, nice. Another thing about Torre's bullpen management: check this out. Unlike Tito, Torre truly uses Myers as a LOOGY. 2/3 of his appearances he's gotten only one or no outs. (His ERA is miniscule, but ERA is pretty much a worthless metric for guys like that.) With Myers used in that capacity, the Yanks bullpen is practically down a man.
ReplyDeleteERA is useless for LOOGYs. I think it was Masseroti this AM going on and on about Myers and Bradfords numbers. I think what is more meaningful is BAA and they have done well by that measure.
ReplyDeletethe way Torre uses his pen it does not really if he is down a man. He only trusts certain relievers and some of the guys they have in NY are awful. They make Seanez look like Papelbon. Speaking of which, Rudy has been pretty decent in his last 1-012 appearances.
I guess that's true - a LOOGY makes most pens seem like they're short a man, but not Torre's.
ReplyDeleteSo here's a question...I think we (and most serious Yankees fans) agree than Torre's approach to using the bullpen is ridiculous. Yet he's pretty successful. Does Rivera make his stupid bullpen management work, or did having Rivera the entire time cause him to develop stupid bullpen management? I didn't follow him prior to the Yankees, so I don't know.
Yeah, I just don't understand all the Seanez hate; he's given up 2 ER his last 15 appearances (ERA: 1.11).
Oh, and after all our NL-bashing, the NL East goes 4-for-4 against AL East teams today. (Let's make it 4-for-5.)

ReplyDeleteAs you said, that is a good question. Actually it is a great question. I had not really thought that having Mo may have impacted how he used the pen. I don't have the number on torre pre MFY, but I suspect maybe it is a result of having had a reliable core of relievers in 1996-2000 or 2001, with guys like Rivera (when Wetteland was closing), Stanton, Nelson, Mendoza, hell even Graeme Lloyd had a couple of pretty damn good years, not to mention a great postseason.
Yeah, lets hope Sox can salvage a win for the AL East. Even with Nl East stepping it up for the day, theh AL is still even for the day, pending Sox outcome.
Seanez with the 3R homer. That one was my fault. Sorry about that.
ReplyDeleteI will take equal credit for that one since I brought his name up first.....
ReplyDeleteI have a goos story from a minor league game today....
That was a typo, I take it? You meant "goose story"? I like goose stories!
ReplyDeleteI also like this half inning....
it's...
ReplyDeleteTHE BATTLE OF THE CRAPPY BULLPENS!!!!
Rudy Seanez with the win. Ridunkulous. (Somehow I think people will be much more pissed off about this than the couple times Timlin did it in May.)
ReplyDeleteGoose, huh. Okay, but my good story will have to wait until tomorrow. and it has nothing to do with kirby pawtuckett.
