Pinball Wizards

So, to follow up with the discussion of All-Star selections in the previous thread, whom exactly should Tito pick to pitch? The last 2 years there have been 13, with 7 or 8 of them starters. Contenders this year are:

Starters
Jeremy Bonderman: 8-4, 3.84 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 0 CG, 73K/27BB
Mark Buehrle: 8-1, 2.67 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 2 CG, 67K/18BB
Bruce Chen: 6-5, 3.73 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 1 CG, 61K/25BB

Relievers
Danys Baez: 4-2, 10 SV, 3.19 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, 24K/18BB
Francisco Cordero: 0-1, 17 SV, 3.90 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 35K/13BB
Jesse Crain: 6-0, 0 SV, 0.88 ERA, 0.85 WHIP, 12K/8BB
Eddie Guardado: 0-1, 19 SV, 1.38 ERA, 0.81 WHIP, 22K/5BB

Mariano Rivera: 3-2, 16 SV, 0.98 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, 31K/11BB
B.J. Ryan: 0-1, 18 SV, 1.87 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, 53K/9BB
Mike Timlin: 0 SV 1-1, 1.31 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 24K/9BB
Bob Wickman: 0-1, 20 SV, 2.67 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 15 K/11BB

Let me know if I left out anyone. So which 13 would you pick? Some are obvious inclusions, some are obvious exclusions. Bonus question: let's say you have to pick Jeremy Bonderman and Danys Baez, as the sole reps of their teams. What 11 do you pick? I'll give my picks later in the day.

8 comments:

  1. Detroit could send Pudge as the backup to Tek and TB could (should)send Crawford over Baez.

So I will work towards 13.

    Locks:
    Clement
    Beurhle
    Garland
    Rogers
    Colon

    Likely:
    Halladay
    Unit
    Santana
Mussina (maybe) - hell pick the Yanks and use them. Tire them out.

RP - tough here. No one jumps out at me, let alone 5:

I guess Ryan looks the best
    Cordero
    Rivera
    Guadardo and
    Timlin

But you could really pick any 5 there.

  2. Yeah, I mostly agree Halladay, Johan, Clememnt, Beuhrle, Garland, Rogers, Colon, Unit, Lee; Rivera, Ryan, Guardado...and one middle reliever. I guess it'll be Timlin, though Crain and Rhodes have better numbers. I'll await your Book Review to hear about that.

Rivera's a lock. Despite his shaky start, he's having another phenomenal season. The last run he gave up was May 6, 17 innings ago. Only given up 7 hits since then. Rumors of his demise were premature....

  3. "Rumors of his demise were premature.... "

    July 14, 15 and 15th versus Sox.
Right after the break. Maybe Tito can play some mind games with him. a few options:

Not use him at all - he would be real rusty come the Series with the Sox.

Overuse him. Or warm him up like four times.

Use him and have Tek tip the hitters on what is coming - damaging Rivera's psyche. although it could cost the Sox home field advantage in the WS.

June book review will not be out until next week. My deadline is June 30

  4. I can see it now:

"How did he know I was going to throw my cut fastball?!?"
    "Because I told him."

  5. Well then...Big Unit giving up 5 earned runs in the 2nd. This changes things a bit. Awesome.

  6. TB seems to have his number this year....

  7. Assuming 13 pitchers, I'd go with:

    Halladay (starter)
    Kenny Rogers
    Buehrle
    Colon
    Santana
    Clement
    Bruce Chen
    Bonderman

    RPs:
    Ryan
    Guardado
    Rivera
    K-Rod
    Timlin.
