Steinbrenner

How many thousands of words were writtent today - with headlines like Boss Slams Yankees, Boss Blows UP, the Boss will Blow when the Boss will Blow. He didn't even speak - it was issued through his puppet, I mean publicist. Here is the entire statement.

"Enough is enough. I am bitterly disappointed as I'm sure all Yankee fans are by the lack of performance by our team. It is unbelievable to me that the highest-paid team in baseball would start the season in such a deep funk. They are not playing like true Yankees. They have the talent to win and they are not winning. I expect Joe Torre, his complete coaching staff and the team to turn this around."

I can't believe I read about 4 articles about this one statement.

Only the NYT accurately reported the Boss issued a PR statement.

  1. Well, they just had a 13-run inning against the D-Rays, so it looks like their losing streak is coming to an end. It was painful to watch.

Man, Tampa Bay just does not get any better, does it?

  2. Then again, Wright just gave up 7 earned runs. Against the D-Rays. Who scored a grand total of 3 runs in 27 innings against the Sox.

After getting those 13 runs he walked his first batter! He is my new hero. It takes talent to piss Yankees fans off even when the Yankees are winning by eight.

Wait a minute, he left the game with 2 on, one out. Come on Quantrill!!!

  3. Damn. Quantrill gave up just one run. Wright's line: 5.1 IP, 11 H, 8 ER, 3 BB, 4 K. Season ERA of 10.05. Awesome.

  4. Anyway, since it's clear everyone's interested in this thread, back to Steinbrenner and the NY media...even though everyone with a brain knows that the reasons the Yankees scored a bajillion points is because the Tampa Bay pitchers are terrible, you just know Boss George is sitting at is home in Tampa all satisfied about how well his motivational tools worked. And that's all the NY media will talk about tomorrow.

  5. George Steinbrenner - motivational speaker. Or in this case, motivational press release issuer?

Well, for everyone except Jaret Wright.

And of course the Unit pitches today, so the Yanks should pretty much sweep the short two game series. Nothing like having the D-Rays around to prevent long losing sleeps.

Would it be safe to call the D-Rays "Slumpbusters?"

  6. Earl, good call on the New York Media eating up the Yankee win yesterday.

The article leads off with, "Steinbrenner, the Yankees' principal owner, seems to have mystical powers over his team, even when he communicates through cyberspace". I guess the PR statement was an email.

To the writers credit, he did mention the fact that the D-rays scored 8 off or Wright.

Amazing... George's statements were a no-lose proposition. If he yells at the team and they still suck, then he gets credit for yelling at them. If he yells at the team and they turn it around he looks like a genius.

It's interesting to read into the Yankee's comments a bit. To paraphrase them, "George is right to yell, BUT we're not playing well". It's clear that they placated the boss but also acknowledged that the Boss has no business telling them how to play baseball. I can't wait until the Yankees face some better pitching.
