Damnit Lucchino

I think he is on to me. From today's Globe.

``Talking about payroll in any way is a competitive disadvantage," Lucchino said. ``We spend a lot of time keeping track of the loose comments regarding payroll and it's been a point of pride that we don't discuss that. It's very helpful for us to know that Team X has made a major announcement that they're going to take their payroll from 72 to 92 [million].

  1. That is awesome.

Seriously though, there's one odd thing about his comment: it's a very good point that talking about payroll is a competitive disadvantage. But so is talking about competitive disadvantages! Now, Team X will never make such an announcement.

  2. I’m not sure I agree with that entirely. Certain markets (TB, Toronto, actually most small and mid market teams) need to make an impression with fans in order to sell tickets and/or keep ticket renewals as well as sell media rights and advertising. Also, if they let the big boys know that they will be players, it could drive up the price for some top level talent, leaving some middle market guys more available – I think that last part makes sense.

Of course as it relates to the real Team X, one needs to be careful that information given out is not a ruse to get another team to act prematurely – like when I say “Wow, AJ Burnett looks like he really made a breakthrough in the second half and should be one of the top 3 pitchers in the AL next year.” Do I really mean that? Or am I just planting a seed to another manager that might get him selected earlier than he should be…..
