Random Thoughts for a Saturday

Great game last night. I will try to keep it in perspective but the matchups now favor the Sox for the last two games. And as we know, a sweep in April does not mean much. That being said, it reveals one more chink in the pinstriped armor.

As the eighth inning started and the game looked lost, I kept reminding myself of what seemed like 10 series in the last 4-5 years where the Sox would drop a tough series opener to the Yanks and then storm back on Saturday (in fact I think both the 17-1 games were on the heels of tough Friday losses). So, I’m sure the Yanks will brush it off and be ready to go this year.

Seeing Posada leave the game made me think he could be the most irreplaceable Yankee of all.

That being said, I need to be careful what I wish for. Boone gets hurt, the Yanks get A-Rod. There is not that big of an impact catcher out there, but you never know. I’m sure the Yanks wish they had not traded for the Unit even more, having gave up Navarro.

I’m very happy Fox is doing only one game of the week to start the season. That means no blackout out here.

And I sure hope they have Dick Stockton calling the game today, like they did last week. What a refreshing change.

  1. Maybe they should wear the green jersey's again today?

And Torre said earlier this year he wanted to limit Rivera to one inning per outing. The Sox were just trying to help Joe out.

  2. I will be - intermittently.
    Nice wheels for Papi.

  3. Lord, what was Abreu doing playing in shallow left field with Ortiz at the plate?

Not that I'm complaining, but damn.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Fly ball coming for Drew?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Agreed on Abreu. Same question last night - why was Miekwiclsajrlew not guarding the line with Coco up.

  6. Oh well. I have feeling we'll score a few more runs this game.

  7. Re: your earlier comments about Remy...one thing I like a lot is his eye for pitches. He's usually right (compare to Morgan: "a sweeping curveball - actually, a cut fastball"), and will often explain the pitch selection.

Plus he almost never sermonizes, about "the way things should be done" the way McCarver, Morgan, Harrelson, etc. do. And he doesn't go on and on about "scrappy difference-makers" like Eckstein or Erstad.

  8. I agree Remy is very good. Great analysis. I guess my point is that there are guys that are just as good and don't get all silly. One thing that contributes to that is Remy does all 162 games (or probably about 150 taking ESPN and Fox games into consideration). And some of the other real good guys do fewer games - so Remy and Orsillo kind of run out of things to talk about (I guess).

I'd much rather have Remy than the guys you and GR mentioned, its just that there are a lot of other really good analysts out there.

  9. Ugh; Beckett is not sharp. Lots of hangers.

  10. Thankfully Carson Daly is pitching for NY. This might be one of those 12-10 games.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Crisp with 3 bunt hits in 3 days. I can't remember him with any (maybe 1?) in 2006.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Holy crap. Two straight bunt hits?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Wow, if this keeps up, Nieves will not be a popular guy in Yankee Stadium soon.

Too bad Navarro's not slugging .600 or something.

    ReplyDelete
  14. One ball out of the IF and 2 runs. Nice.

    ReplyDelete
  15. YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOKKKKKKKK

("Are you saying Boo, or Boo-ookilis?")

    ReplyDelete
  16. I think Navarro would be happy with an OPS of .600.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Can't get one by McCarver

    ReplyDelete
  18. Abreu learned. Damn.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Dammit, Abreu was playing deep. Stupid Abreu.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Whoops, you beat me to it.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Fox is cutting over from the Cubs/Cardinals game for A-Rod's at bat? Come ON.

    ReplyDelete
  22. So the quote from the Flood book on McCarver.

McCarver saw a young black child stealing some baseballs at spring training and yelled out "Hey stop you little N******." right in front of Gibson and Flood. Also Gibson didn't take too well to McCarver calling other blacks colored.

  23. Nice little dance by Manny.

Hey A-rod has more HRs than Manny has hits.

That sucks. I guess it won't last all season.

    ReplyDelete
  24. So what do we do here. Get Beckett through 5. Then run out Pinero, Romero, Donnelly, Timlin and Papelbon?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Amazing. Even when baseball gets it right and I can watch the Sox on a Saturday, they mess up and the Giants game is not on TV here. Stupid blackout rules.

    ReplyDelete
  26. At the risk of jinxing him, Beckett has settled down.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Is this commercial talking about Iraq? Or a rock?

    ReplyDelete
  28. That's what I heard as well.

"Iraq is a country in the midst of a civil war with U.S. troops caught needlessly in the crossfire."

    ReplyDelete
  29. PAPI.

Only way Abreu was catching that was if he was in the 12th row.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Back to last night's game. Joe Torre, on using Mariano in the 8th:

“I lied, what can I tell you? I’m not going to defend it. I lied. I didn’t plan on lying, but I did. As it turned out, he didn’t pitch two innings. I sort of, in a roundabout way, held to the one-inning stuff.”

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yeah, I saw that quote as well. Pretty funny.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Beckett's retired 9 in a row. Pretty...unexpected.

    ReplyDelete
  33. If gets through 6 that would be gravy. He has thrown less than 80 pitches (according to Yahoo!)

Then they can play matchups even better and/or save Okajima for tomorrow.

2 more runs would be nice.

  34. Did you read Olney today?

    ReplyDelete
  35. You mean about a possible Rivera fade?

    ReplyDelete
  36. More so about the intentional chuck at Lugo's head.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Yeah, I actually missed the whole game, and didn't even know about the throw to his head. But it's interesting that Olney sees a reduction in the cut of the fastball. Most people who say Rivera's fading, base it on nothing but blown saves.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hey, so how many saves has he blown against the Sox? He has 57 in his career - at LEAST 10 were to Boston, I think. But I can't find the stat anywhere.

    ReplyDelete
  39. They said it last night - it is 11 of the 57.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I guess the key question is: out of how many save opportunities?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Who would have thought Becjett would make it this far.

    ReplyDelete
  42. And by Becjett I mean Beckett.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Mo has 35 saves against the Sox, so I would guess something like 11 blown out of 46.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Oh crap...

I think I'd like to see Donnelly here.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I wouldn't mide seeign Donnelly out there now. A-rod has had 3 looks at Beckett.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Holy crap - right as i typed it.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I'm feeling strangely relieved here.

    PLEASE get Giambi out.

    ReplyDelete
  48. At least it wasnt a HR. Now Romero can get Giambi out and the inning is over.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Wow!

Whould have thunk Oki would have a huge impact in first Yankee series.

    ReplyDelete
  50. That guy has an awesome delivery. I love the way his head snaps down after the pitch.

So, is "Hideki" a super-common name in Japan, or only big in baseball (Irabu, Matsui, Okajima)? Reminds me of "Reggie" in U.S. sports - White, Green, Jackson, Miller, Bush...

    ReplyDelete
  51. I'd like one more run here.

    ReplyDelete
  52. must be a freak thing like Reginald:

    http://www.issendai.com/rpgs/japanese-boys-names.shtml

    ReplyDelete
  53. Good find! It also says "Hideki" is a variant of "Hideo", which makes it four. That's ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Don't forget to breath?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Don't forget to breath?

    ReplyDelete
  56. Had 'em all the way.....

    ReplyDelete
  57. Thank god ARod didn't get one last at-bat.

    ReplyDelete
  58. So which chick from Ultimate Road Trip will get pregnant this year? good thing Scott Proctor is making more money this season!
