  2. amazing. Ron Kulpa was the home plate ump in this one and in Schilling's last week.

  4. Its amazing that he throws so damn hard, but generally does not strike out that many people. 12 last night was his career high. And he throws 100 MPH consistently. I know it is flat, but even with a decent secondary pitch he should be able to K close to a guy an inning. But he is not even close to that.

  5. Compared to Escobar who struck out 14 in 6 innings, but gave up 3 runs on 3 hits! WTF?

  6. Escobar's performance last night was an absolute quirk. I mean Verlander was a season and career high, but he has always had the stuff.

As for how I know it was Ron Kulpa (same ump), I generally like to pay atention to who has the plate). I was at the Schilling game (actually was late, but heard the pre game when they announced the umps while in the car getting to the park) and made the mental note of Kulpa being the balls and strikes ump. Of course Kulpa sticks out because he was the ump the Carl Everett head butted in 2000 to draw his 10 game suspension. And when I watched the ninth last night of Verlander, the announcer said "Kulpa with the call...."

  7. X, stop trying to hide your baseball geekness.

    :-)

Ah... I love any mention of my namesake.

    Go Sox...

  8. It helps me to know when the ump is going to suck (Froemming, one of the Hirschbecks, though I forget which one), be inconsistent in his calls (Iasadora), have a crazy wide strike zone (Chuck Merriweather), or be fun to watch (Dale Scott and his totally cool punchout call).

Yes go Sox. And yes, any time I can get toothy into a post or comment, that is a good day.
