Johan to the Mets

I can live with that. It will be fun to analyze over the next few years. Based on Omar's history of signing players, we can now expect Johan to suck or be hurt in 2009, floowing the lead of Pedro and Beltran.

  1. A stroll down memory lane....

Remember how Pedro had a bit of a problem with the Sox and their treatment of Schilling. I wonder if this will replay again in Flushing. I guess it was not all bad for Pedro, he and Schilling won a WS together.

“I told (Henry), ’You want to sign me, get it done,” Martinez told the Herald. “Please force them to get it done. I’m willing to stay here. Negotiate with them. I just don’t want to be under Schilling.”

"Schilling is 38, I'm only 33," he said. "The fact that I had an off year doesn't mean that I can be below Schilling. Still, with an off-year, I'm way over Schilling as a pitcher and I've pitched pretty much like Schilling the last few years, if you're going to talk about durability."

  2. Yes, Pedro will now do a stint on the DL due to a sprained/bruised ego.

Also, the Twins are dumb. They could have had Lester or Ellsbury (heck even Hughes or more from the Yankees)...Now they get only minor league talent with "potential" to be more than that. Not one big name (right now...) going back to them.

But, that pretty much helps the Sox a heck of a lot anyway.

  3. Yea... I am pretty satisfied by the end result (knock on wood - I guess it isn't over unless they can work out a deal).

The Sox played this smart. They put out an unbelievable offer which set the stakes quite high. Which took the Yankees out of the running.

I think 5 players is a lot. Granted they are not proven prospects, but it's a lot of player to work with.

But this is pretty much like saying, the team that will win will score more points!

  4. Ok... it is especially stupid when I get the number of prospects wrong. Geez.

  5. I think it is kind of tough to criticize the Twins for playing it the way they did. Its like saying someone is dumb for not having sold their google stock for $700, now that it is at $550. Hindsight is 20/20. And I think most people thought Hank Stenibrenner would up the ante and sweeten the pot. I mean, really this was the same guy who said he would not negotiate with A-Rod, as well as not give Posada four years. Plus it was Bill Smith's first big move.

So yeah, sure with the clarity of hindsight, they could have gotten more. But with pretty much every stock that I have sold in my life, you never know when the price has hit its peak until much later.

  6. Pedro will love this:

"We've been lacking what we consider a true No. 1 starter," Minaya said. "It doesn't get much better than Johan Santana."
